One Night Abroad

One Night Abroad in Tanzania, Africa: Serengeti Plains – Serengeti National Park

We’re going on an African Safari in the Serengeti! Actually, this is part of Smartling’s One Night Abroad Project. Smartling is a small company that was founded in 2009 and is currently headquartered in New York City. Smartling’s cloud-based software platform streamlines the process of creating and delivering multilingual content to customers anywhere in the world. Essentially, Smartling is a company that translates websites. I was asked to plan in detail the ideal night abroad. Such as, how I personally would assimilate myself into a foreign culture using language, food, and fashion! I’ll need to fit in well so I’ll have to learn the culture, dress “appropriately,” breakdown any language barriers, make travel plans and choose a cuisine among other things. By creating these types of scenarios, I believe, Smartling is able to stay in touch with the world’s forever changing communication and interpretation variables. Smartling is also able to better accommodate clients when developing and marketing software technologies. I’ve decided to take Smartling along with me on the ideal perfect “One Night Abroad” in Africa!

I think it’s best to put, at least, your ego aside when traveling abroad and show some respect for cultural tradition. In Tanzania, where the Serengeti Plains are located, there is a diverse cultural background. Luckily, English is one of the official languages spoken in Tanzania along with Swahili. Kiswahili or Swahili is the official language, while English is considered the official primary language of commerce, administration, and higher education. Arabic is also widely spoken. Especially in Zanzibar which is known for its beautiful beaches. I happen to speak, read and write a number of secondary languages, and Arabic happens to be one that I’ve dabbled in. Enough to get me by let’s say… Typically when traveling in Africa a native will be assigned as guide who will accompany you everywhere. So language doesn’t seem to pose much of a problem. It’s probably best to learn a few common phrases and words anyway. Or have some sort of access to a travel dictionary or phrase book. Keep in mind there are also many other local languages. Religions will be the next thing to take into consideration. On the mainland the population is 30% Christian, 35% Muslim and 35% have indigenous beliefs. Zanzibar is more than 99% Muslim in population. Tanzania’s population totals at around 39 million. The currency used there is called a Tanzanian Shilling. The conversion rate is 1.00 TZS = 0.000597729 USD or 1 USD = 1,673.00 TZS. Which if my math is correct then one shilling is equal to much much less than a penny. Sounds like a pretty economical trip if I do say so myself. Tanzania’s climate is tropical due to its location just south of the equator in East Africa bordering the Indian Ocean. There are two rainy seasons. The Masika has the heaviest rains that come during mid-March to May. The mvuli has a shorter period of rain from November to mid-January. Then there is the dry season. This is the best time to visit Africa for the trip that I’ve planned. Temperatures are cooler and last from May to October. Travelers find Tanzania to be one of the more popular destinations in East Africa. Of the many natural attractions there are the beaches of Zanzibar, Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Because of Tanzania’s poor infrastructure; physical geography, roadways, and general transportation systems, land travel takes a lot of time to get around in such a large country. Tanzanians have a reputation for being very friendly. Outside of petty theft violent crime is substantially rare.

I can’t imagine anything more beautiful than a hot air balloon ride at dawn over the Serengeti Plains. The Serengeti is a National Park which makes any night drives, walking safaris and off-roading strictly forbidden. A lot of time will be spent in a vehicle while in the Serengeti so a hot air balloon ride is a welcomed change of pace. –

Hot Air Ballooning in the Serengeti National Park

Hot Air Ballooning in the Serengeti National Park

When on safari in the Serengeti an open topped 4×4 Jeep is the best way to travel and also allows for maximum viewing pleasure. Choosing the right vehicle is important. Up to six hours a day can be spent traveling in a car. I definitely want to make sure it’s comfortable and that there is plenty of food and water packed. More than five or six passengers often makes the safari ride not as enjoyable as it could be. Room to comfortably stretch your arms and to stand up on the seats, and poke your head through the roof to truly enjoy all the wildlife is key. ––Serengeti-.htm

Safari Vehicles in the Serengeti

Safari Vehicles in the Serengeti

I want to see the zebras which is why visiting in the dry season from May to October is the best time for the safari. In the Serengeti National Park is where the great annual migration of millions of wildebeest and zebra begins and ends. The zebra population is growing more each year. The start of the great annual migration happens in June. On the central Serengeti Plains there are thousands of zebra with their young. They spend their time grazing and resting their heads on the others backs. Absolutely breathtaking to imagine. It isn’t too uncommon to find a lion stalking a herd when on safari out in the wild. ––Zebra–Tanzania.htm

Within the Serengeti National Park there are designated camps for visitors to camp at overnight. I’m marveling at the thought of staying in a mobile tented camp on the banks of the Grumeti River at the Tanganyika Wilderness Camp. From the picture it looks really accommodating and upscale. Each tent even has a flushing toilet and warm shower. There is staff on duty to service you and fresh food. At night you can enjoy a nice camp fire. All of this under a bright starry sky right in the midst of the wildlife during the great annual migration. Hippos, hyenas and lions, “Oh my!” ––Serengeti-.htm

Now for the grand finale… wardrobe! A tropical climate in the dry season is perfect. With an average high around 80 degrees and a low of 60 degrees. Can’t beat that. A Diva is a diva is a diva. My style for my One Night Abroad is definitely from the runway to the wild. Here are some fun looks to play with.

Fendi | Women’s Spring/Summer 2015 Collection

Published on Oct 29, 2014

On September 18th Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi sent out a young and fresh Spring/Summer 2015 collection inspired by the Roman arches of majestic Palazzo della Civiltà.

For the Fendi women’s collection spring summer 2015, Silvia Venturini Fendi and Karl Lagerfeld have taken great care of details, with impeccable finishing of the matter. We can find a lot of daywear style, with casual pants and denim. The cut of the trousers is very soft on the sides and closes on the ankle. Blouses and tunics are well shaped, and feature handcrafted works, such as laser-crafted leather, or fringes as an application, always in leather. Skirts recall the silhouette of a trapezoid models from early seventies.

It continues with midi dresses, asymmetrical and with an open front, to leave once again discovered the legs, decorated with colorful flowers sewn in relief. Beautiful and convenient solution for daytime. The evening, for Fendi, is short. Once again, the maison tip on the mini dress, well-designed to follow the contours of the body, with cuts and transparent inserts, really sensual.

The alternative for the night is the bustier dress with gold appliques, declined in a very light shade of sugar paper. Precious and elegant.
The mini bag is confirmed as one of the most popular and glamorous in terms of accessories, to which are attached the famous bag bugs, colored fluffy hairballs that are depopulating worldwide. Sandals with straps complete the look for Fendi’s next summer.

BOSS Womenswear Fashion Show Spring / Summer 2015

 Jason Wu | BOSS Womenswear Spring/Summer 2015

#thisisboss #bossfashionshow

What would fashion couture be without the likes of Jason Wu? What’s more, what is a fashion show without ambiance? The BOSS Womenswear Fashion Show Spring/Summer 2015 was held live in New York. The venue was impeccable. Guests were seated along the exterior of the highrise studio which was lined with floor to ceiling windows overlooking New York. More guests were positioned opposite the runway along the interior of the studio. Behind those seated guests were electronic pillars that gave the illusion of a moving forest scene. These pillars were strategically placed along the exteriors walls of the studio. As the first model approaches the runway she is introduced with a dramatic and suspenseful techno-mix which transitions into warm classical music, and then again back to the same techno beat. All of which is signature to Jason Wu. We’ll hear him talk about what inspires his creative expression, dubbed #thisisboss, as the new Artistic Director for Hugo Boss BOSS Womenswear.

I am tempted to say that Jason Wu has truly outdone himself, but this is only his first year with BOSS Womenswear, and it can only get better from here. My first impression of the Spring/Summer 2015 collection was Pablo Picasso meets fashion. Picasso is one of the most important figures of the 20th century in art and the art movements that evolved during that period. He introduced the cubism art form and this was an entirely new way of viewing art. Pablo Picasso’s art focused on color and expressionism, as opposed to two-dimensional art forms, cubism focuses on artistic expressions seen in more than one way, dimension, and angle. —

Wu himself drew his inspiration for the BOSS Womenswear Spring/Summer 2015 collection from the work of artist Agnes Martin. The fabrics are meant to be structured yet fluid with a signature color palette.

Clearly both Picasso and Martin were abstract expressionists who often worked with the same soft color palette. This signature is very evident in Jason Wu’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection. The abstract geometrical patterns and rigid seam lines are sharply sophisticated while at the same time very comfortable, and relaxed. Pairing these designs with above the calf gladiator sandals is sensational. Definitely bold and risque. Instead of coming off as a terrible attempt to push the boundaries of fashion it actually emphasized that delicately feminine yet assertively masculine edge. Jason Wu has certainly set the bar high for fashion creatives. The 2015 Spring/Summer collection is fresh, edgy and simple. I absolutely love these pieces. Jason Wu knows precisely how to style the everyday modern woman.

As also apparent with the less casual designs. There is a bit business or formal flare as well as more elegant pieces. Quite stunning. Wu made a point of pairing long dusters with cocktail dresses and sleek blazers with a similarly designed skirt to show the relaxed versatility of his collection. The dresses themselves come in a variety of designs that range from strapless, sleeveless and backless to knit-crotchet, shear overlays, shiny gloss and three quarter-length. The plunging necklines are daring yet graceful. And, of course, a Spring/Summer collection must-have were the mini dresses and mini-skirts. His choice in fabrics is exceptional. Every aspect of the BOSS Womenswear is very practical. Right down to the venue of the fashion show. Outside of the electronic beams and the runway music things were very simple and quaint. Even the models were dressed particularly plain. The hair was combed back and pushed behind the ears, nude make-up, and no accessories except for a belt or a handbag. A fabulous over-sized pillbox shaped leather clutch with a metalwork handle. Jason Wu has the perfect creative eye for styling today’s woman. I thought the long sleeve blouse with mini-skirt was very wearable. The pant suits were also fantastic. Holding on to the traditional Hugo Boss while incorporating femininity. I found them both casual and business professional. After the fashion show scroll down to hear what Jason Wu has to say about #thisisboss. Just below that you’ll find the new THISISBOSS movie directed by Marco Brambilla starring Suvi Koponen. Very exciting! What will next season have in store?

The new BOSS Womenswear Spring / Summer 2015 collection is inspired by structures of cement and glass and also by the work of artist Agnes Martin with colors of celery, pastels and also a mixture of monochromatic black and white looks. The fabrics are structured, yet still feminine and fluid.

Welcome to my closet. Let’s get styling! Fashion for everyday and every occasion.

Magic Potion NO. 3 - Business attire browsing.

Magic Potion NO. 3 – Business attire browsing.

Business casual does not equal “business boring”. Trust me! These creme colored khaki flare (…or boot-cut) pants are a wardrobe necessity. Very versatile. One reason being that you can wear them any season. So sexy and sophisticated. Add the navy blue blouse with cropped sleeves and a bow tie collar for a comfortable professional look. The great thing about these pieces, the pants, the short sleeve blouse, the long sleeve black cardigan and the brown ribbed skirt—they are all interchangeable. In a business setting you should present professionalism in every aspect of your appearance. Jewelry should be classy, not over the top and flashy. These black sapphire earrings set in matching black with a lever back can go a long way. A beautiful antique style comb is a nice touch. The comb is a darkened black metalwork leaf with intricate carving that gives it great detail and texture. For the shoes I chose to highlight the versatility level when dressing for the office. This pair of chunky navy blue suede wedges with ankle bow is trendy, yet conservative enough. Animal prints can actually work as a neutral, so to speak. Meaning that almost any outfit or color will balance well with it. These shoes are a light tan with cheetah print and a 1.25″ heel. Both comfortable and feminine. Red is also one of those colors that can be the accent piece and will compliment most any outfit and color. Here I have a pair of red leather pumps with approximately a 2.5″ heel and bow. At the very bottom left you’ll see a front and back view of a pale gray peep toe pump with a 4″ heel. You can’t go wrong with a loafer heel. The brown leather trim, the white with geometric flower print in light pastels and the pastel orange toe strap with a brown leather and metal buckle overlay makes this shoe unique as well as classic. It has a 3.75″ block style heel which can make wearing them more comfortable than a taller thinner heel. Another great shoe for work is a nude colored pair of mary janes, also with a 3.75″ block style heel.

Boho Chic - Wear your free spirit on your sleeve, literally... Nonchalant sophistication. Exclusive, exotic, boho. Glam.

Boho Chic – Wear your free spirit on your sleeve, literally… Nonchalant sophistication. Exclusive, exotic, boho. Glam.

Here I’ve pulled together pieces that reflect traditional female sophistication and paired them with relaxed bohemian pieces. I chose a long ruffle pleated skirt in metallic. I found a great sleeveless metallic and soft golden brown leopard print turtleneck. The intricate metalwork necklace, bangle bracelet and delicate silver dangling earrings match perfectly. This look is all about mixing and matching so adding colorful statement pieces makes the outfit complete as well as sexy-chic. A chunky silver ring band with decorative metal scrollwork prongs clasping a dark amber gemstone is a fabulous accent piece. Using this color scheme against the metallic and silver gives the ensemble subtle flare. A 3″ – 3.5″ heel nude sandal blends boho with chic and sexy. For the lips a shade of deep blush lipstick is soft but also works well to highlight the color scheme. Throw on this shaggy salmon pink shoulder bag to really spruce things up. This burnt sienna fedora sun hat is just the right accent piece for a boho chic style. Last but not least, a pair of animal print square wide-rimmed sunglasses in a smoky salmon tint.

Strike A Pose - Red Carpet ready.

Strike A Pose – Red Carpet ready.

Step out for a charity gala, step out for the evening or just plain step on out wearing something confident, simple and sexy. A pair of black leather pumps with a metal stiletto heel says it all. This is a shear white silk camisole blouse with a black detailed floral leaf print. I’m partial to the colors black and blue…..they compliment each other so well. Pairing this camisole and heels with a powder blue geometric tiered mini-skirt gives the right amount of contrast as an accent piece. The purse is a small black leather clutch. A little eye candy around the neck, gold chandelier necklace, and a sleek gold wristwatch.

When I’m creating and styling my focal points are comfortable, simple and classy. Three words to live and die by. I have a very eclectic sense of style and you’ll get a sense of that as you view the looks that I create. I prefer to be a trendsetter, not so much trendy. As a fashionista it is my job, of course, to stay up to date with the latest trends. The key is to stay true to your own fashion sense. And have fun with your style.
